Tonight, thanks to the Reproductive Health Access Project and papayas, I learned all about the options for first trimester abortions and even performed an aspiration abortion on a papaya! My motivation for going to the seminar was 1.) I staunchly fight for reproductive justice and access in my activist work and yet I was a little shaky about the medicine behind it and 2.) I am really scared about reproductive health access and how every day, anti-reproductive-health assholes chip away at the constitutional right for me and all those with uteri to control our bodily autonomy and heath. I wanted to at least be theoretically familiar with how a first trimester abortion works. I think I am going to go to more seminars in the future just to be safe. I have read the Handmaid’s Tale too many times and to be honest, I’m terrified.

Yes! I went to this event with some other rad folks, and we were all just amazed at how simple the process is. Granted, I’d be way more anxious about doing this on a human being, but practicing on papayas doesn’t hurt. Also, just putting it out there that the Reproductive Health Access Project also has a program that offers free IUDs to folks in NYC!

This is probably my most used home brewing recipe, and the simplest. It’s an easy soda, refreshing on it’s own or tasty mixed with gin or vodka. I love to make a large batch before parties, everyone loves it and it costs less than even the cheapest generic sodas. The major plus here is once you have the basic recipe down it’s not too hard to make tweaks and changes to suite your personal preferences. This ginger ale is entirely different from most American brands (i.e. Vernors, Canada Dry), in that it’s flavor comes directly from fresh ginger root which is spicy and refreshing. The carbonation comes from a minor act of fermentation by bakers yeast as it ‘eats’ the sugar in the drink, creating carbon dioxide (fizz!). This is the same reaction used to make alcoholic drinks, just on a shorter and smaller scale (in this case the amount of alcoholic content is negligible, around half a percent).

To make a 2 liter bottle of Ginger Ale you will need:
  • A cleaned out 2 liter plastic soda bottle with screw-on cap.
  • A fine grater or zester.
  • A funnel.
  • A 1 cup measuring cup.
  • A 1/4 cup measuring cup.
  • A 1 tbsp. measuring spoon.
  • A 1/4 tsp. measuring spoon.
  • 1 cup sugar (raw or cane is fine)
  • A chunk of fresh ginger root.
  • Bottled lemon juice or  1 medium lemon.
  • Active baker’s yeast.
  • Water.
To make the ale first combine the dry ingredients inside the 2 liter using the funnel; 1 cup sugar and 1/4 tsp. yeast. Next grate the ginger until you have at least 2 tbsp., depending on how flavorful and spicy you want your drink to be, you could use up to 4 tbsp. Pour the ginger and then the lemon juice (1/4 cup of the bottle stuff or the juice of 1 fresh lemon) into the bottle as well. Then fill the bottle the rest of the way up with lukewarm water within one inch of the top, using the water to rinse any remaining ingredients from the sides of the funnel into the bottle. Cap and shake gently until all of the sugar is dissolved. Find a warm place to stash the bottle, I think the top of  kitchen cabinet is a good place and let the bottle sit for 1-2 full days checking periodically to see how firm the bottle feels. Once the bottle no longer gives at all when you squeeze it’s ready! Move the bottle to the fridge (this will stop the fermentation process) and wait until the ale is chilled to serve. If you don’t like chunks of ginger in your drink wrap a piece of cheesecloth over the neck of your bottle when you pour. The chunks will mostly settle to the bottom of the drink anyways.

Further options:
I love adding extra flavoring to my ginger ale by making my soda with an herbal tea instead of water. My favorite flavors are hibiscus, lavender, or peppermint but there are many other options as well (pretty much any edible herb you’d like!) I make the tea ahead of time, using boiling water and dried herbs to taste making sure it’s cool to touch before add it to my other soda ingredients (if it’s too hot it will kill the yeast!) The hibiscus is especially nice because it gives the soda a striking magenta color. Consider making a number of smaller bottles of ginger ales with different flavorings, experiment with different colorful and medicinal herbs.

herbal smoking mixes

guerrillamamamedicine:

Let’s finish up the first month of the New Year, and our focused work with the mint family, by making an herbal smoking mix. Any dried mint-family plants you have on hand can be used make a great healing smoke, especially if mixed with some mullein, and perhaps a few other herbs. Smoking can be good for the health of your lungs and your being.

Careful application of hot smoke and burning herbs, near the body (smudges), on the body (moxibustion), and through inhalation (smoking) are healing techniques that have been used for thousands of years in myriad cultures around the world. If you choose not to smoke these herbs, you may still wish to try them out as smudges.

Herbal Smoking Mix Number One: Combine one large handful cut and sifted commercial mullein leaf and one to three teaspoonfuls of any mint-family plant. Mix well and smoke in a pipe or roll in paper. A relaxing smoke that is good for the lungs.

Bergamot (Monarda varieties): rich in oregano oil, an powerful lung antiseptic

Catnip (Nepeta cataria): roll your own catnip cigarettes to relieve menstrual cramps fast fast fast.

Horehound (Marrubium vulgare): bitter taste, powerful effect on the lungs.

Hyssop (Hyssopus off.): powerful penetrating healer of lung tissues.

Lemon balm (Melissa off.): liberally added to mixes to help fight viral infections.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca): alters perception when smoked.

Oregano, rosemary, thyme, and sage: antioxidant, anti-infection; aromatic tastes; deep healing

Oswego tea (Monarda didyma): minty taste; harvest late summer when in flower.

Pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegioides): just a pinch lifts the mood and brings a smile.

Peppermint (Mentha piperata): nice taste; nice to the lungs.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus off.) : as smoke or smudge, improves memory, wards off dementia, counters asthma, and pleases the fairies.

Medicine people and post-menopausal women are the ones most likely to smoke. Fire activates the spirit of the plants and this may prove overpowering for young or untrained people. Each Medicine person makes their own smoking mix, imbued with the spirits of the plants that are their allies.

Herbal Smoking Mix Number Two: Combine one handful each finely chopped uva ursi leaves, cornsilk, and mullein, plus one to two tablespoons of powdered or ground thyme or sage. This is a fair substitute for those wanting to smoke less tobacco; it is more bracing than relaxing.

Fire use sets humans apart. We alone have fire, the dangerous friend, as an ally. Burning herbs is a shamanic action. Inhaling the smoke from burning herbs confers both physical and spiritual healing. The smoke directly affects the lung tissues, opening them and relieving spasms. And smoke carries prayers.

Herbal Smoking Mix Number Three: Combine one handful each finely cut coltsfoot, mullein, motherwort, nettle, hops, and cronewort. Smoke at the dark and the full of the moon to increase your visionary powers.

Some plants have spirits so strong that smoking them alters our perceptions. Happy High Herbs, A Guide to Natural Highs and Addiction Solutions, by Roy Thorpe of Australia, includes these common psychoactive smoking herbs: scotch bloom flowers, California poppy, Mexican poppy, damiana, hops, wild lettuce, lion’s tail, madagascar periwinkle, motherwort, mugwort, nettle!!, passionflower, and Salvia divinorum. Some of these plants are poisonous internally.

Please treat all plants, especially these, with respect and care when you make use of them.

Next week – more adventures with herbal smoking mixes.

Green blessings,

Super easy glass etching tutorial

What you’ll need:

  • Old glass bottle (I used a San Pelligrino bottle, I love the green glass)
  • Glass Etching cream (I purchased some from Hobby Lobby, $10 for a tiny bottle but a little goes a long ways) I used Armour Etch
  • Blue Painters tape
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Paintbrush
  • X-acto Knife

First, section of a part of your glass and make a block of tape for your stencil

Next, draw the shape or letter forms you’d like to etch. Keep in mind the counters or white spaces in the middle of letterforms, you want those to stay

Cut away the portions you want etched

WIth your paintbrush directly from the jar AND while avoiding skin contact dab on the etching cream liberally. You don’t need to pile it on but you need adequate coverage so that your stenciled areas appear white

Wait 5 minutes & Rinse thoroughly with water.

VOILA. You’ve got a funky, one-of-a kind etched glass.

doing this. and combining it with this idea.

“Oh! I almost forgot. Here is my astro-projector. I think we can all agree that this makes any room 100x cooler. Some swanky site was selling it for $25 but I bought the same exact model on eBay for about eight bucks. It was missing some screws (hey, for $8…), but it was easily fixed with a trip to ACE Hardware. I suggest building a blanket fort and spending the night in it with the astro-projector lit up.”—Andabingbangboom
Aww, this is amazing!
